The lithographs of Chagall. Volume 1 dust jacket only. Original lithograph issued as a promotional piece

Paris: Atelier Mourlot, 1960. Original lithograph (Mourlot catalogue 281). This version of the original dust jacket of the first volume of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs was produced as a promotional piece for the Seven Arts Book Club in New York City. Folded, it measures 30.5 x 23.9 cm, so it is about 3/4-inch shorter than the published dust jacket, and the flaps have been trimmed off. Unfolded, it is 47.7 cm wide. An 8-page pamphlet is stapled inside at the centerfold:--Seven Arts News no, 125: The lithographs of Chagall; 13.9 x 21.3 cm. The piece was folded once to the cover size and then again crosswise for mailing. Envelope not present. This exceptional book with its 11 color lithographs, 2 black-and-white ones, and the lithographed dust jacket, had an original list price of $25, but the Seven Arts Book Club offered it for $17.50. The text in the pamphlet refers to this cover of this mailer as a "reproduction of the original lithograph Chagall designed for the jacket," but that is a misstatement, as a comparison with an actual jacket would make abundantly clear. This, with its saturated colors, was an overrun or second run from the original stones by Mourlot, the original printer of the lithographs. An actual reproduction would have required photography, color separations which inevitably would have fallen short of the subtle coloration in this image, and the expensive setup for a conventional press run. The decoration on the inside of the folder is printed in half-tone -- the dust jacket was blank inside -- and the difference under a good magnifying glass is obvious. Some unavoidable wear at the folds. Very uncommon. **Free domestic or international shipping with direct order. Item #05484
