Moses and His People / Moïse et son peuple. Original lithograph from The Biblical message of Marc Chagall / La message biblique, 1972

Paris: Fernand Mourlot (printer), 1972. Original lithograph from The Biblical message of Marc Chagall / La message biblique. Mourlot 689. Printed in four colors and black on white wove paper. 31.8 x 24.1 cm. 10,000 copies of the published books (French, English, German). (A vastly more valuable edition of 50 copies also was issued on much larger Arches paper and signed in the lower margin.) These once-common but desirable prints by Chagall and many other 20th-century masters typically appeared in relatively large editions as book illustrations. They are authentic works described in the catalogue raisonnes. When Chagall created these images, he did not sign the plates in the stone because their presence in the books guaranteed their authenticity. Books like this and the two volumes of the Chagall Bible stood among the great bargains of the 20th century, when they first were published at normal trade prices,. Thousands of copies have been stripped and the prints sold separately. Once the leaves are loose, how does a buyer distinguish reproductions from the real thing? First, be extremely skeptical of any of these prints without margins that claim to be "signed." Second, buy from a reliable seller who stands behind his or her offerings, and dismiss those who demand exorbitant prices gussied up with worthless "C.O.A."s. Good luck! The black frame is part of the scan, not the work of art. **Free domestic or international shipping with direct order. Item #05569
