Fauna
[Sevillle?]: Junta de Andalucia, 1989. ISBN 84-86620-04-X. 2 volumes. Largely illustrations (photographs, drawings, and documents) of elaborately constructed, imaginary animals: a snake with six pairs of legs; a winged elephant; a fanged rabbit; and other marvels. 111 pp. Tan paper covers with titling in dark brown, and plain card slipcase. 22.4 x 16.8 cm. This elaborate artistic hoax began with the premise that Joan Fontcuberta and the photographer Pere Formiguera had discovered the archive of Dr. Peter Ameisenhaufen (1895-1955??), a researcher into obscure and previously unknown creatures. The resulting exhibition appeared in several European countries, Japan, Canada, and the US. A review of the show at MoMA described, "photographs... both in their natural habitats and in laboratory situations; detailed field notes, both in the original German and English translations; an occasional skeletal X-ray or dissection drawing; two or three tapes of the animals' cries, and in one case, an actual stuffed specimen.” This edition appears to be uncommon. Creased top front corner of cover; otherwise, fine. Includes another version of the catalogue from Malaga and Sevilla that contains only the text, in parallel Spanish and English. 32 pp. **Free domestic shipping with direct order. Item #09301
