Oakland, California: Mills College Library, 1977. Artists' books. 45 letter-sized leaves + poster folded in fourths in yellow commercial folder with pockets. 43 of the leaves are images by the artists. The folder is 30 x 24 cm. The poster, unfolded, is 45 x 36.8 cm. This show preceded the much larger "Artwords & Bookworks" at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, which opened on a Tuesday exactly a year later. A coincidence? More likely, knowing the actors, a response. Participants included Poltroon Press, Rebis Press, Mary Fish, Richard Newton, Italo Scanga, Susan Schwartzenberg, Joyce Cutler Shaw, Sylvia Salazar Simpson, Barbara Smith, Walter Gabrielson, Judith Golden, Susan Grieger, Fred Martin, Pat Patterson, Alexis Smith, and others. Eleven artists exhibited who are not included in the catalogue, including Hamish Fulton, Gilbert & George, Richard Hamilton, Allan Kaprow, Suzanne Lacy, Niki de St. Phalle, and Andy Warhol. Folder heavily browned at spine and top. In the scan of the poster the unprinted margins are cropped about an inch on the sides and top. Item #100657
