Adolf Hitler, the unknown artist

Houston, Texas: Billy F. Price Publishing Co., 1984. Primarily illustrations: 92 in color and over 750 illustrated catalogue entries in black and white. The first 18 pp. contain brief texts: "Introduction"; "Hitler and the fine arts"; "The researchers"; "The collectors." Entries date from a sketch of two apples in 1899, when he was ten years old, to a sketch for a security tunnel in 1943. The work is not unskilled but very conventional, as one might expect, without a trace of the changes that were bubbling up around him: Jugendstil and Art Nouveau, Viennese Secession, Futurism, Cubism. If only some prominent connoisseur had taken him up at an early age. . . ? On my shelf, he sits right next to John Heartfeld. What an appropriate pairing. Slight foxing on the endpapers and some adjacent pages. The prior owner's inconspicuous blindstamp on the front flyleaf. Otherwise, near fine in dustjacket, which is slightly faded at the extremities, with Brodart sleeve. ISBN 0-9612894-0-6
