Anselm Kiefer: the high priestess

London: Anthony d'Offay Gallery, 1989. 302 plates & Illustrations (253 color). 226 pp. Dark-gray cloth with dustjacket. 36.1 x 25.8 cm. A splendid book about Kiefer's monumental work. "The basic elements of the sculpture. . . consist of two steel bookcases and almost 200 lead books. The books vary in size and shape, weighing up to 220 pounds. . . . About half of them contain either photographs of a wide variety of subjects, or have other material attached to the lead pages, ranging from human hair to dried peas. Further additions include coloured emulsion, red and yellowish-brown clay, and applied silver. In a very few plates, touches of paint have been added with a brush." The lead itself was first subjected to the laws of chance by physical wear, "by oxidation,. . . micro-organisms,. . . and by chemical reactions." Virtually as new.
