Paul Klee: paintings, watercolors, 1913-1939

New York: Oxford University Press, 1941. 2 serigraphs in color & photograph of Klee by Josef Albers. 65 illustrations on 62 plates printed one side + 35 pp.,+ all on card stock Cloth-grained grey paper with titling serigraphed in white and light blue. Bound with clear plastic comb binding with wraparound covers. 27.9 x 21.7 cm (leaf size). This copy belonged to the art expert Aldis Browne and bears his discreet blindstamp on the flyleaf. Laid in: a typed sheet of the Dalzell Hatfield gallery's watermarked stationery, "List of paintings reproduced in the Klee book still available"; 23 works with prices from $180 to $3,000. Fire up your time machine. This heavily aged leaf. folded and with several pencil marks, is undated but surely is roughly contemporary with the book. The serigraphed front cover has a small manufacturing defect visible in the scan. The spine is severely browned; soiling at front edges of covers; some wear at extremities, especially bottom edge; small defect at top of rear cover next to spine. Despite this litany of deficiencies, a far better copy than most. Typically, this beautiful but vulnerable book suffers from missing serigraphs; broken or detached covers; a broken comb binding; detached pages; and other indignities. Item #17517
