La danse des faunes / The dance of the fauns. Original lithograph, 1957, Mourlot 291

Cannes, 1957. Picasso created this lithograph on May 24, 1957, "for the benefit of the newspaper 'Le Patriote' at Nice" (from Fernand Mourlot's catalogue raisonné, where it is number 291; also Bloch 830). The edition was 1,000 copies on paper watermarked "Arches" and "Mourlot," and signed with a stamped signature in the lower right margin. In addition there were 200 signed and numbered copies, plus a few artist's proofs. For this large edition, "a light ochre background was printed under the composition." The dimensions are: paper 19 x 25-1/2 inches / 48.2 x 64.7 cm; printed image 16-1/2 x 20-7/8 inches / 41 x 53 cm. Another copy with significant condition problems sold at Christie's, New York, in 2007 for $3,840. This unframed copy with full margins has been treated and cleaned recently by one of the foremost paper conservators in the country. Very pale shadows from the previous framing remain at the margins, but the copy overall is near fine. There are no tears or creases. Item #26294
