Original untitled drawing

1961. Original expressionistic ink drawing, signed and dated 1961 in a minute hand. 19 x 13.4 inches / 48.2 x 34 cm. He and Geraldine Fitzgerald founded the Everyman theater of Brooklyn in 1967. Among his literary works and collaborations are the rock opera “Everyman and Roach” (1971), a musical “The Zinger” (1976), “The Arbor: Three Portraits” (1979}, “Bella Figura” (1980), “Poisoner of the Wells” (1983, on the Black Plague), and “The Clairvoyant” (1984). This loose, gestural piece is in rapidly applied dark blue ink on cream-colored paper; the signature and date are in brown ink. Some will see a figure or a face, but that may be accidental. Several defects: the bottom right corner turned, marginal creases and tears—one extending right to the image—and two small spots at the upper right corner. The scan of the whole picture contains nearly the entire drawing and crops 1-1/4 inch at the left edge and 1-3/4 inch at the bottom. The second scan shows the signature at the bottom right slightly enlarged. At 10X mgnification, it appears to read "Brother Jonathan OSF Dec 1961 [uncertain]." The whole written line is 1-3/4 inches, Light streaks are reflections from a Mylar covering. Item #27201
