[Los Angeles?]: the artist, ©1980. Artists' books. Both publications consist of photocopied letters or drawings printed one side and bound loosely in comb bindings. 27.8 x 21.3 cm. **Correspondence: [56] leaves. Black cover; white binding: "I asked friends to lend me something they received in the mail that effected [sic] them strongly, and explained that whatever they chose would be reproduced in a book. Each response is included herein, unedited. Recipients include Vaughan Kaprow, from Jean Follett; Tony DeLap, from Robert Elkon; Edie Danieli, from B. Lodato; Judith Hoffberg, from Phyl Reinhardt; Cathy J. Wittel, to Barbara Smith, who owns this copy and whose signature is inside the cover; to Walter Gabrielson, from Peter Plagens; to Patricia Tavenner, from the Museum of Modern Art; to the editor; and to 16 others. Normal signs of handling. **Auto/graphs. Yellow cover; black binding: "The following is a series of self portraits drawn by selected individuals. Provided with a black felt tip marking pen and an 6-1/2" x 11" sheet of white paper, the artists were instructed to keep their eyes closed while drawing. The final characterizations, although created spontareously, are symbolic of each individual's self-perception." [3] leaves + [31] printed drawings with blank sheets interleaved throughout. Among the participants are Craig Kauffman, Tony DeLap, Melinda Wortz, Mark Lere, Judith Hoffberg, Barbara Smith, Betye Saar, Vaughan Rachel, and the editor. Inscribed in yellow pencil on the title page to Barbara [Smith]. No limitation notices; presumably, the editions were at least enough for a copy to each contributor. OCLC locates neither title, and there appear to be none for sale as of this writing. Price is for both volumes. **Free domestic shipping with direct order. Item #27301
