In this highly influential exhibition, Clement Greenberg, with the help of James Elliott (LACMA) and Fred Martin (San Francisco Art Institute), assembled a group of artists whom he felt were taking abstraction in a new direction: “[I]n the interests of optical clarity, they shun [the] thick paint and tactile effects” and abjure “the ‘handwriting’ and ‘gestures’ of Painterly Abstraction.” The 31 artists in the show were Walter Darby Bannard, George Bireline, Jack Bush, Gene Davis, Ernest Dieringer, Thomas Downing, Ralph DuCasse, Friedel Dzubas, Paul Feeley, John Ferren, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Hamilton, Al Held, Alfred Jensen, Ellsworth Kelly, Nicholas Krushenick, Alexander Liberman, Kenneth Lochhead, Morris Louis, A.F. McKay, Howard Mehring, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Raymond Parker, Ludwig Sander, David Simpson, Albert Stadler, Frank Stella, Mason Wells, and Emerson Woelffer. This is the Council’s 7th exhibition and was intended, with Lawrence Alloway’s Six painters and the object and Six more “to provide a view of the two developments in recent American painting which have coalesced into movements.” The wire binding almost guarantees damage.
