Artwords & Bookworks: an exhibition of recent artists' books and ephemera. 28 February-30 March 1978—REPRINT

Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art (LAICA), 1978. La Jolla, CA: Laurence McGilvery 2019. Reprint from the original newsprint (with permission). [48] pp. No illustrations. 27.6 x 21.8 cm. Off-white cover. Texts by Mike Crane, Joan Hugo, and Judith A. Hoffberg. A bibliography and list of sources precedes 25 3-column pages of American and international artists and organizations--probably 200 or more, and something approaching two thousand different works that represent some of the best work from the early years of artists' books. Separate errata sheet printed on the copyright page. This material was a passion for the curators, both of them my good friends. Judith's personal collection of artists' books is in the special collections of the University of California campuses at Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and her umbrelliana is at UC San Diego, in La Jolla. Joan was an incomparable librarian, teacher, writer, and thinker at Otis Art Institute, where she formed a great collection of ephemera and artists' books, most of it now dispersed, unfortunately. All the early figures appear here: Ed Ruscha, Allan Kaprow, Ian Hamilton Finlay, John Baldessari. An essential document. The show also traveled to Artists Space in NY, the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, and the New Orleans Contemporary Art Center. New. **Free domestic shipping with direct order. Item #43552
