San Francisco: Artforum, 1963. Cover in red of a ceramic piece by Ken Price. Profusely illustrated (no other color this early). 59 + [8] pp. 27 x 26.6 cm. This very scarce, early issue of Artforum includes features on Peter Voulkos, Ed Kienholz, and Cornelia Runyon, plus an overview of California sculpture ranging from Simon Rodia to Bruce Conner and George Herms. Among the nearly 80 sculptors illustrated are Manuel Neri, James Melchert, Charles Ross, John Bernhardt, Charles Mattox, Robert Arneson, Robert Hudson, John Mason, Claire Falkenstein, Dennis Hopper, Tony DeLap, Jeremy Anderson, Harold Paris, Robert Cremean, Jack Zajac, and Wilfrid Zogbaum. This was Artforum's most ambitious issue after its birth fourteen months earlier. Erasure on front cover with "63" written over it; presumably "1963." Moderate wear; bottom front corner bumped.
