Artforum, volume V [5], number 1, September 1966. Surrealism issue, with cover design by Edward Ruscha, "Surrealism soaped and scrubbed"
Los Angeles: Artforum, 1966. The justifiably famous Surrealism issue of Artforum magazine with its great cover by Ed Ruscha. It sold out three weeks after publication. Articles by the following writers: Max Kozloff, Lucy R. Lippard, Ronald Hunt, Robert Rosenblum, Toby Mussman, Roger Shattuck, William Rubin, Whitney Halstead, Kurt von Meier, Sidney Tillim, Annette Michelson, Nicholas Slonimsky, and Nicolas Calas. The title of the cover, by the way, is "Surrealism Soaped and Scrubbed." Surely, that is Ruscha's own invention, and perhaps a wry and perceptive comment on the contents of the issue, **This copy with its fresh color is in better than usual shape; there is some normal wear at the front edge and spine; the front cover has diagonal creases at the corners of the front edge; there are a few visible scratches. but most handling marks and indentations are visible only in glancing light; other elements that may look like scratches are part of the image. The back cover with its Ferus/Pace ad has perhaps a touch of pale dampstaining at the upper left corner and a bump at the upper right corner with a diagonal crease, plus normal marks of handling. The scans are of this copy. This is item M9 in Edward Ruscha: editions 1959-1989 (Minneapolis: Walker Art Center, 1999). We also can supply most other issues of Artforum at more modest prices. Please see our long runs, as well.
