San Francisco & Los Angeles: Charles Cowles, 1965-1966. With volume 4 Artforum came fully of age. This bound volume contains all the year's exceptional issues. September 1965 (4:1) begins with a bang: a whole issue on The New York School, Pollock, Matta, The Club, the Forties, the Fifties, Motherwell, Rothko. October (4:2) Frankenthaler, Johns, and a cover and article on Simon Rodia's Watts Towers. November (4:3) Sidney Tillim on Pop and Barbara Rose's "How to Murder an Avant-Garde." December (4:4) Flavin, Magritte, Motherwell, Rosenquist. January 1966 (4:5) a cover and article on Wallace Berman, Oldenburg, Munch, David Smith. February (4:6) a discussion between Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, and Warhol; Robert Morris's "Notes on Sculpture," and a cover and article on the Jugendstil exhibition at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Herschel Chipp told me at the time that all the soon-to-be-famous rock-poster artists came to that show and took away with them vast amounts of inspiration. March (4:7) Matisse, Ad Reinhardt, and Kaprow's "The Happenings are Dead--Long Live the Happenings." April (4:8) Gemini Lithography Workshop, Joseph Cornell (with cover), and two articles on Kienholz. May (4:9) Judd. O'Keeffe, Dine, kinetic sculpture. The volume ends in June (4:10) with the first of 8 articles by Robert Smithson published in Artforum between 1965 and 1973, plus ancient Egyptian art, Naum Gabo, and WPA art. The selections above probably represent far less than 20% of the 600+ pages in this volume. This new, never-sold copy is bound in dark-green library buckram to my own specifications that allow all the pages to open up fully with no loss at the very narrow gutters and margins. At the time of their binding, each issue was selected specifically for pristine condition. The only slight defect now is browning at the edges of some pages, the consequence of more than 50 years' passage. Since there are six identical copies available at the moment, the current price is set at a ridiculously low $100. The price will climb to a far more plausible level after the first three of these are sold. Postage for most foreign orders will exceed $65; for domestic shipments by media mail, please allow $6. Most issues of Artforum are available from 1962 to 1980. The free, on-line Artforum Index, 1962-1968, at my own website includes a comprehensive index to these issues, including illustrated advertisements. Item #69016
