Dyn number 1. Wolfgang Paalen, publisher.

Dyn number 1

Mexico City: April-May 1942. The first of five issues (6 numbers). 8 mounted plates (5 color), 2 original woodcuts by Paalen (1 mounted, and 1 hors-texte), plus 12 text illustrations. 52 pp.Original paper covers. 28.3 x 22.5 cm. Texts variously in English or French by Wolfgang and Alice Paalen, Edward Renouf, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Charles Givors, and César Moro; artwork by both Paalens, John Dawson, Jean Caroux, and Eva Sulzer (photographs of British Columbia). Paalen was a member of the Surrealist Group until 1942, when he broke with André Breton and began publishing Dyn as a way to reconcile Surrealism with the larger world. He later rejoined the Surrealists. "Dyn," from "dynaton," Greek for "the possible," also was the title of a 1951 exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Art that featured Paalen and his friends Gordon Onslow-Ford and Lee Mullican. This bright copy has minor defects for this title: a little dampstaining along the top edge and corner; some dampstaining at the bottom edge and corner; and a shallow bump at the bottom corner. The red spine is intact. One other copy of this rare periodical available at a much lower price.
