New York: Second Half Publishing Co., Autumn 1958. 2 hors-texte color plates + 24 b/w plates & 24 b/w ills. 60 pp. Original paper cover by Franz Kline.. 29 x 22.9 cm. The second issue of one of the most important of any of the relatively few publications with direct contributions from Abstract Expressionist and New York School artists. This issue contains work by nearly 60 artists and writers, including Dore Ashton, Philip Guston, Thomas Hess, Harold Rosenberg, Paul Jenkins, Willem & Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Piet Mondrian, Ad Reinhardt, Jack Tworkov, and dozens of others. A $3.00 sticker replaces the original $2.00 cover price; similar stickers occur on other copies, suggesting that the publishers raised the prices as the remaining stock diminished. This copy good, with signs of handling; the front cover and first 16 pages display some rippling in the lower corner from dampness at one time, but no pages are stuck; it also has two small spots of silverfish damage; the rear cover has a large number (teiephone?) written on it with a marker or brush; it also suffered some kind of studio accident that produced a presumably inadvertent and fragmentary monoprint. By whom?. The scans are of this copy. Three other roughly comparable copies are available at slightly different prices. Arntzen/Rainwater Q193. Item #74974.3
