San Francisco: The City Llghts Books Pocket Bookshop, 1955. The Pocket Poets Series No. 1. It all began here. True first edition of five hundred unnumbered copies printed letterpress by David Ruff on cream laid paper. 27 poems on 44 unnumbered pp. Stiff, black card covers printed in yellow, with title and rear-cover text printed on mounted yellow wraparound label. 15.4 x 12.5 cm. The printed price is 65¢. No. 1 in Ralph Cook's City Lights Books: a descriptive bibliography. Subsequent editions were printed by offset and feature the yellow title panel as a design feature, not a separate piece of paper. Tight, fresh, and near fine, with these slight deficiences: There is a tiny 2-mm rubbed spot on the back joint of the cover; a small, very light, unidentified stain at the top, front corner of the text block affects only the edges of the pages without bleeding into the face of the paper; there is a small line at the bottom right rear edge of the pasted label; finally, the 6th and 7th leaves escaped the binder's cutter and remain connected at the upper fold; I have not separated them. What looks like an irregularity at the lower edges of the two cover scans is a shadow produced by the scanner; the color of the scan is somewhat lighter and brighter than the original. **Free domestic shipping with direct order.
