Wholes and a sum of parts (poster)
Santa Ana [? Probably Orange], California: Purcell Art Gallery, Chapman College, February 21 - March 16, 1968. Poster. Offset lithograph in black on thin, metallic silver paper. 43 x 55.9 cm / 16.9 x 22 in. Verso blank. Folded in four. A two-man show, curated by artist Harold Gregor, then in the Chapman Art Department and with previous San Diego connections. The image is two photographs of the artists in their studios: Baldessari by John Waggaman; Matheny by Ron Lawson. This extremely scarce and fragile poster is from the collection of Richard Allen Morris, fellow artist and close friend to both men. It shows normal signs of wear, with a nick 2 x 10 mm at the left edge of the horizontal fold and a small, irregular hole 5 x 6 mm above the fold. The metallic paper proved very difficult to scan. The real image is dramatically crisper, and the two halves of the composition are much more equal. The two gaps barely register as light spots in the scan. "John B" and "Bob M" written on the blank verso with marker; there is no trace of it on the printed side.
