Original charcoal, Ethel Waters in Mamba's Daughters, by Dubose Heyward, 1940

A haunting and beautiful drawing of Ethel Waters and Silvia Vincent in DuBose Heyward's widely acclaimed Broadway stage play Mamba's Daughters (1940). Ethel Waters was known only as a singer until she proved herself much more than that in this great play. The artist Ron Blumberg (1908-2002) created many exceptional portraits and figure studies during the 1930s and 1940s. This is one of the very best. The drawing is black charcoal on pinkish-tan paper. The frame measures 28-7/8 x 5 inches (73.3 x 63.5 cm) and the mat opening is 19-1/16 x 15-1/5 inches (48.4 x 38.5 cm). Also available: a glamorous double portrait in vivid color of Tyrone Power and Loretta Young in the 1938 film "Suez.'' Sale price for Ethel Waters $2500 through 12/31/2022. Item #03401
