"La unidad es la vida; sin ella, no hay vida" [original silkscreen poster]

Los Angeles: Aztlan Multiples [print workshop] for United Farm Workers, 1984. One of two dazzling silkscreen posters produced for the exhibition "Australia: nine contemporary artists" at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art (LAICA). The other was "Organizar." The show was part of the 1984 Olympics Arts Festival. The only copies I have located are at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Printed on white matte wove paper. Image: 87.2 x 55.4 cm; sheet: 89.2 x 57 cm. Although the documentation states an edition of 300, the printer at Modern Multiples in Los Angeles (previously Aztlan Multiples) who actually did the the job remembered it well and said that there were not more than 100 copies. In response to an inquiry by Bob Smith (the founder of LAICA), Gregor Cullen replied, "It's likely we would have printed 100 sheets. I can recall… some printing issues… reduced the final edition… I'd say we would have ended up with 50-75 of each poster." This copy was damaged in shipping with some surface loss and then repaired clumsily. The damage is not obvious under glass. Priced accordingly. Item #100791
